This has been a rough week for film-goers. Emotionally, that is. All right. Maybe just for me. First it was Disney/Pixar’s “Brave” with its too-close-to-home interrelationship strife between mother and daughter. Now, it’s “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.”
I’ll be the first to admit I was rather up for this film. Come on, an apocalyptic romance starring Steve Carell and Keira Knightley? It’s like a geeky-chick-flick-watchers dream come true. Only, I was wrong. So wrong.
[SPOILER ALERT: stop reading if you haven’t seen the film]
This film, which is fairly big on humor as we get underway, slowly deteriorates into, well, the end of the world. There’s no escaping that. The end of the world does come, even though the lead characters manage to fall in love and be together at the end of it.
It’s a somber film featuring some truly hilarious and otherwise potentially scandalous moments (children drinking, random hook-ups, sort of rampant drug use). I laughed hard. I cried hard. And truth be told, don’t leave this film for date night. After all, no one really wants to see the snot coming out of your nose when you realize not even falling in love can stop the inevitable – even though it obviously takes the edge off…
