“I never have expectations. Once I did, and the result was crap.”
Meet Ryanne Van Dorst, lead singer and guitarist of Elle Bandita. You should call her Elle, though. Pay attention or you’re sure to get a spanking. Elle Bandita is a Dutch rock band. Think high octane. Think f*ck you. Then, imagine you’re getting a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the band in the days leading up to their performance at Lowlands – a legendary festival in the Netherlands and a big freakin’ deal for Elle.
I Just Want to Call You Baby is the 2011 documentary about the days leading up to Elle Bandita’s performance at Lowlands in 2009. It is directed by Kim Herman.
Get an unflinching look behind Elle’s day-to-day as she tries to explain why it doesn’t matter if someone approaches her after a show, intent on sleeping with her because of her image and not for who she is. Listen closely and you’ll get the reason behind why she “hates kids” and chooses lovers based solely on their appearances.
Make no mistake, Elle is rock through and through. Acidic and rough around the edges, she’s unafraid of pissing everyone – even an audience filled with die hard fans – the f*ck off.
Originally begun as a project to cut a teaser trailer for the band’s first appearance at the Lowlands festival, director Kim Herman found herself with more usable material than she’d originally hoped for. Filmed with steady cams, in mostly black and white, I Just Want to Call You Baby has a familiar rockumentary vibe, complete with dressing room and backstage candids of Elle and the band.
In the space where reality meets rock and roll, fantasy is reality. As the footage rolls, you’ll find yourself wondering if it’s all an elaborate act or if Elle is the real deal. She throws herself offstage, crowd surfing like it’s the glory days of grunge. She breaks equipment and screams profanities at her audience. She’s self-possessed and overly confident, oozing sexuality as she humps monitors onstage and brazenly approaches random people after shows.
I don’t know whether to get a tattoo of her face or run screaming in the other direction should I see her on the street. Call it a feartraction – the strange combination of fear and attraction. I Just Want to Call You Baby is an unflinching snapshot at the kind of moment that can make or break a band.
